Viennese: O Du Lieber Augustin

During the Great Plague in 1679, Marx Augustin was a much-loved Viennese street minstrel who fell asleep drunk in a gutter and was taken for dead by those who cleared the streets of plague victims. He was buried in a mass grave outside the city along with his presumably infected bagpipes. According to the legend (and this song about him), he awoke underground and played his bagpipes until he was rescued. The title translates as “Oh, you dear Augustin”.

O du lieber Augustin, Augustin, Augustin,
O du lieber Augustin, alles ist hin.

Geld ist weg, Mäd'l ist weg,
Alles hin, Augustin.
O du lieber Augustin,
Alles ist hin.
