You know the drill from the DFE: play each exercise in this group in both seventh and first positions, and remember: “first finger E on fifth string” to find seventh position by listening instead of looking.
Colored circles show where to finger the notes that positions I and VII have in common, and measure bars show the normal four-finger ranges for both positions. First position has been extended to include the high A. Notice (and remember) that in position VII three notes ( C♯, G♯, E♭ ) require a stretch, either with finger 4 (as shown) or with finger 1 on the next higher string.
Scale 1. Just the black keys.
Scale 2. The classic chromatic.
Scale 3. Now the “blue” keys.
Scale 4. Three diminished chords cover the octave.
Scale 5. Gershwin's rhapsody.
Scale 6. Sultan's motif.
The boxes below automatically keep track of which exercises you've seen in this group (you get a gold star for each exercise you visit). And clicking on a box will take you to that exercise (you can see the exercise number by hovering over a box and looking at the url displayed). So all this lets you pick up where you left off in your last session, or go on to some random exercise you haven't seen yet. Courtesy of your browser history.
